Trying to be Ready for Drywall

If everything was ready, we could drywall next week, which would be great! Dad and his neighbor Jack came down yesterday and wrapped up electricity in the kitchen. Those are some pretty fancy lights! they are on a 3-way-switch and it is great to have overhead light again. AND ALL of the outlets work, making it pretty easy to have the power tools going.
Bryna, John and I worked on wrapping up the last bits of projects, including electricity in the tagalong, this is where we stopped last night, good thing we have a few more days!

Nearly Two Birds

During the up coming bathroom remodel the old cast iron flange is going to be removed,  the plumber recommended that we put shield in case anything falls it will not damage the drywall. And we needed to rough in a box for the light fixture.
At first we thought that they were going to go in the same spot, but we ended up putting them right next to each other.

Insulation and Vapor Barrier

Electrical got wrapped up on the west wall in the addition and we insulated it.
so now the whole addition area is insulated.
Dave and I then installed the vapor barrier, and I taped the edges and over all of the staple holes. This should slow any rot down!
Dave spend most of Sunday fixing the walls that were left in (these are kind of hard to take pictures of) After I dropped him off at the airport Bryna and I cleaned up the work shop.  We have 2 big projects and a lot of little ends to wrap up before we can get the drywall guys in.

Chimney Treatment (part 1)

Mortar comes in itty-bitty pails or 60 lbs bags, (the 60 lbs bags are ½ the cost of the pails). I was very nervous to buy a 60 lbs bag (I was worried about getting it into the house), but I did, and then I realized that other things feel close to 60 lbs.  Like a box of tile or a 5 gallon bucket of paint. So I got the mortar into the house and I started the patch on the chimney.

Here it is when we uncovered it (and plugged it with a 'rag'):

And the first layer of patch with a rock in it:

Three Beer Night/ a little bit of bath demo during the kitchen remodel

Jason, Jason, Jason, you need a lesson in how to install a toilet and how to build sub floor.  Or more important you need to never touch a house again.

The poor upstairs toilet that was put on a floor built of LAYERS of thin boards (over top a sub floor and hardwood floors ), and then installed without a flange. You really didn't want to give this toilet a chance did you.
The support joists that were hung from below did not stop the toilet from leaking, so we took it off last night and put in a temporary board for it to sit securely on. The BAD choices of construction materials that one of the previous owners thought was a good idea still amazes us.
for a temporary fix last night felt like progress, hopefully that is one problem solved (as in we know how to get the toilet not to leak)

Insulation in the Kitchen

With the floor in place we took down the rest of the ceiling in the addition.
We used two different insulation, one with a vapor barrier and one without. During the process we also roughed in the electrical.
Once the ceiling was done we moved to the walls.
Above: half of the walls electrical is roughed in and ready for insulation. and then my phone didn't keep the rest of the pictures.  Leading me to think that maybe phones should be trusted to take pictures.  Dad and I finished up this wall with wires and insulation late yesterday.  Bryna and I got the west wall done so it is ready for wires and insulation and the plumber started making repairs today.

The toilet upstairs is sitting on flooring worse than we thought so we are going to take a look at fixing that sub floor before we work on the pocket door.

The Tagalong Bathroom Floor

The old joists weren't even worth saving.
Even with joist hangers, hanging new joists is not a simple task.

But now the floor beneath the toilet feels very solid.
We could have a dance party,
a very small dance party.
